Introduction

Municipalities should be at the fore-front of drives to achieve a green economy. The Environmental Practices Skills Programme (Level 2) is aimed at workers and operators in a range of occupations in local government. Achievement of this skills programme will equip workers to understand and develop the skills for more environmentally sustainable practices in their occupation. At this stage, modules have been developed for 3 occupations including:

  • Waste workers,
  • Water and sanitation workers, and
  • Parks and gardens/biodiversity workers.

This skills programme is not only for municipal workers, even though it has been designed with this group in mind. It is also suitable and appropriate to workers and operators in any business sector aiming to improve its workers’ environmental performance. This could include, for example, environmental consulting firms involved in environmental rehabilitation, environmental EPWP programmes or industry sectors such as forestry or manufacturing where operations have some sort of environmental impact that could be managed in an improved manner through better worker practices and environmental knowledge.
